It is nowadays commonly accepted that metadata and metadata systems are useful and necessary for organizational and inter-organizational networking, information flow and retrieval. ISO 19115 and its XML-representation ISO 19139 have become de facto standard for metadata descriptions in the environmental community. Many initiatives are formed to establish a wide network of metadata repositories. They collect metadata about geographic and non-geographic information or create broker architectures and systems for distributed retrieval through decentralized repositories.
In order to achieve the INSPIRE-goals on a large scale, easy to use tools have to be developed to manage ISO 19115 metadata. In this presentation we will focus on NOKIS an ongoing project developing the metadata-infrastructure for German northern coastal zones. Additionally we will present disy Preludio, a professional web-based suite to edit, search and manage ISO-19115 metadata. It includes an OGC-compliant CS-W-interface and can be flexibly tailored to several metadata-profiles. disy Preludio can be downloaded for free with a sample ISO-profile. Early next year a new version of disy Preludio will be launched.
