The increase of coastal problems due to rapid developments and changes brought new planning and management needs into agenda. Integrated Coastal Area Management (ICAM) concept was developed under the Mediterranean Action Plan (MAP) for the sustainability of coastal areas in the Mediterranean Region.
Antalya is a southern province of Turkey with the longest coastline on the Mediterranean Sea. Side-Manavgat section of the province is a privileged area with its natural beaches, sand dune forests, rivers and natural and historical relic sites.
A number of problems coming from poor planning and management are seen in that section of Antalya coasts due to the facts that the coastal identity and ecosystems were not sufficiently dealt with in the environmental master plans of the area and that the revision plans increased the construction density.
In this study, land use changes in Side Manavgat section of Antalya coasts were investigated from the 1980s to the present time by using aerial photographs and high resolution sensor remote sensing images.
In order to evaluate coastal land use of Side-Manavgat the land use of 1980, which was determined by the classification of the aerial photograhps, and the land use of 2003, which was determined by the classification of high resolution sensor remote sensing images were compared. Level 3 of CORINE Landcover classes were utilised due to the details of the data, as the method of classification of land use types. As a result of this study, some changes in land use types were observed which are; decreasing agricultural areas (-625 Ha), coniferous and mixed forest land (-207 Ha), beaches-dunes-sands(-68 Ha), natural grasslands and transitional woodland-shrub (-131 ha) and increasing discontinuous urban fabric and commercial units (mostly tourism units) (+495 Ha).
Some planning and management model suggestions for Side-Manavgat coasts were given within the framework of integrated coastal area planning and management.
