Mahin Lake is situated within the trangressive mud
coast and lie in the north-western flank of the Niger Delta. This lake is located
within the coastal plain that stretches about 20km inland. Sediment Dynamics
in this lake region is caused by erosion, which has severely affected the coastal
life in this mangrove zone. Dredging activities during the creation of network
of canals within this region have also been significant, and have had impact
on biodiversity in this environment. The importance of visualisation techniques
that use acoustic equipment to monitor the underwater and river bed cannot be
overemphasized. Therefore, there is the need for governmental agencies and oil
producing companies' to look at the possibility of prospecting oil and natural
mineral resources in this Shrinking Lake.
