Organisation description

The Coastal and Marine Resources Centre, founded in 1994, is a multidisciplinary research centre in the Environmental Research Institute, University College Cork. The overall objective of the Centre is to investigate the interactions between biological and physical coastal and ocean resources and human populations, in order to establish the level of sustainable utilisation, and thereafter, stimulating the adoption of scientifically-based integrated coastal and ocean management plans.

Research programmes focus on:

  • Physical coastal processes and seabed mapping;
  • Integrated Coastal and Marine Area Management (ICMAM);
  • Marine biology (incl. marine mammals & seabirds group);
  • Development of GIS, Remote Sensing and Internet Solutions for ICMAM.

The CMRC currently employs 17 research scientists and runs 21 national and EU funded research projects.
The CMRC has been responsible for the organisation of a number of seminars, conferences and training courses over the last number of years, some of which are listed below.

  • 1998 : 4 day seminar and workshop on remote sensing applications for Irish End Users, 25 participants, funding under FP5.
  • 1998 : 3 day workshop on Integrated Coastal Management in Southwest Ireland, 50 participants, funding from Irish Marine Institute.
  • 2002: 2 day workshop on application of SAR to coastal areas, 30 participants, funding under FP5
  • 2003: 3 day seminar on aquaculture and economic and social sustainability, 25 participants, funding under EU QLRT programme

Facilities and infrastructures

The CMRC has access to the facilities and infrastructure of University College Cork:

  • A wide range of lecture halls and meeting rooms to host both large and small audiences.
  • Laboratory and computing facilities for hands-on workshops
  • Computer software with site wide licencing for GIS and Remote Sensing analysis.
  • Support for presentations and lectures (e.g. overhead projector, computer data projectors, slide projectors, video equipment).
  • Full catering services provided by the university

The CMRC offices and University College Cork is within easy reach of Cork International airport and train station, while there is a wide range of accommodation options within close proximity to the UCC campus.
