Organisation description

GISIG is a non profit Association on Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and on Geographical Information (GI), constituted in 1992 as Technology Transfer Centre on GIS. The member organisations (approx. 100, from more than 20 European Countries) are universities and research institutions, GIS technology suppliers, local bodies, companies operating on territorial subjects. That guarantees interdisciplinary expertise both on tools and on their applications.
GISIG promotes Thematic Networks in order to create frameworks of common interest among its members and to establish links and partnerships with different GIS application domains, linking together users groups and professional operators and combining the use of GIS technology with the integrated study and development of the application domain. Initiatives are then promoted in the field of:

  • GIS and Integrated Coastal Area Management
  • GIS and Water Resources
  • GIS and protected areas

GISIG has promoted various European Projects on GIS networking initiatives, in terms of transfer of know-how and technologies, and of information collection and diffusion in the GI sector. These projects could be considered as interest groups, similar to Thematic Networks, within the GISIG Association and within its operational lines:

  • ECO-Geowater: European COnferences and forum to link GEO and WATER Research
A pool of High Level Scientific Conferences to assess and present the state-of-the-art of the scientific research in the GIS discipline to support the analysis and solution of the problems of sciences in the water domain.
  • Nature-GIS: A European thematic network for Protected Areas/Nature Preservation and Geographical Information
Nature-GIS is a network bringing together the different stakeholders in protected areas: users and experts in IT and in nature conservation.
  • PANEL-GI: Pan European Link for Geographical Information
The PANEL-GI project has constituted a GI European Network involving partners from the Central and Eastern European Countries (CEEC) in the process of creation of a Pan European Geographical Information Forum.
  • BEST-GIS: Best Practice in Software Engineering & Methodologies for Developing GIS Applications
The project has faced the problem of the involvement of the final user of GIS applications producing as summary result Guidelines for Best Practice in User Interface for GIS.
  • Leonetwork GISIG (LEONARDO).
It was founded as European network for training and university-enterprise co-operation in the GI/GIS field, for student placements and staff exchange, courses and seminars organisation, actions for GIS diffusion.
  • In 2003, together with ICCOPS, GISIG organised the international conference CoastGIS'03 - Fifth International Symposium on GIS and Computer Cartography for Coastal Zone Management, held in Genova from the 16th to the 18th October 2003

Facilities and infrastructures

GISIG has as founder member AMGA Azienda Mediterranea Gas e Acqua (the multiutility service company of the city of Genova), that hosts the association and lets available its facilities, e.g. the AMGA Convention Centre.
The AMGA convention centre is located at the company's headquarter, in a central position only 600mt. from the main Genoa's railway station and from the airport terminals.
Built according to the most updated technical and attractive solutions, from 1991 the Centre hosts conferences and workshops. The centre has a hall with 300 seats that may be split into 2 halls with 100 seats and with 200 seats. For international meetings a service room can host interpreters for the simultaneous translation.
