Organisation description
ICCOPS is an international non-profit association founded
with the aim of promoting the protection and improvement of the environment,
and in particular the sustainable development of the ocean and coastal
areas in conformity with the policy of the United Nations, assuming as
its principal reference the Agenda 21, Chapter 17.
- Within its main objective, ICCOPS is active for:
- Promoting and carrying out research projects of ICM,
in particular with the purpose to harmonise the natural resources uses
with the protection/preservation of the environment
- Developing multidisciplinary approaches in a multiple
collaboration perspective
- Serving as a point of reference for groups and experts
in coastal- and ocean-related studies
- Promoting the collaboration among researchers on the
above mentioned subjects
- Furthering international networking with similar institutions
- Convening conferences, workshops and stages about coastal
and ocean related issues.
As a non-governmental organisation, ICCOPS has the observer
status for the Mediterranean Action Plan of the United Nations Environment
Programme (UNEP/MAP).
Since 1993, ICCOPS has promoted initiative for implementing
the collaboration between the scientific environment and international,
national and local organisations, in the field of research, education
and training in Coastal Areas Management. ICCOPS participated actively
in the preparatory works of the Convention on the Protection of Marine
Environment and the Coastal Region of the Mediterranean Sea, signed in
Barcelona in 1995.
In May 1998, ICCOPS organised the International Conference on Education
and Training in Integrated Coastal Management, to which many major
experts in the field of ICM gave their contribution. This event was organised
with the sponsorship of the UNESCO, the collaboration of the Intergovernmental
Oceanographic Commission, the Co-ordinating Unit for the Mediterranean
Action Plan, the International Centre for Science and High Technology
of the UNIDO and the support of the EU Commission
In 1999, ICCOPS participated to the "EC/US Consortium for Transatlantic
Cooperation in Marine Policy and Coastal Management Education".
This project included the creation of a network of 6 Universities in EU
and in US, and produced the intensive course Integrated Coastal Management
in the Mediterranean and Atlantic Coasts,.
In 2000, ICCOPS realised a Master Course in Integrated Coastal Area
Management, held in Savona (Italy) and addressed to 30 graduate students.
The course, for the duration of eight months (1200 hours), aimed to form
professionals with interdisciplinary concerns and organisational skill,
able to: i) collaborate to the creation, implementation and assessment
of ICM programmes; ii) play a triggering role in the involvement of all
the actors of the process, iii) get a basic competence in planning and
management tools; iv) get a basic competence in Information Technology,
especially for as regards the use of GIS
In 2003, together with GISIG, ICCOPS organised the international conference
CoastGIS'03 - Fifth
International Symposium on GIS and Computer Cartography for Coastal Zone
Management, held in Genova from the 16th to the 18th October 2003

Facilities and infrastructures
ICCOPS can exploit the facilities of the Faculty of Architecture
- University of Genova
The Faculty of Architecture is located in the old centre of the town in
a renewed XIII century convent. Two prestigious halls are available for
conferences or courses:
- The Benvenuto Hall, in the main building of the Faculty,
in the former Bishop's dwelling, hosting up to 100 people
- The Aula Magna, nearby, in the former San Silvestro
Church, able to host up 330 people.
Both halls are located in ancient and suggestive buildings,
but are provided with the most modern devices for allowing high level
meetings. Close to the halls there is as well the Centro Bibliotecario
Nino Carboneri, the Faculty of Architecture's library, that host a large
and updated section about landscape planning and coastal management. Moreover,
the large classrooms of the Faculty are available for exercises or practical
lessons.
