Organisation description

The University of Seville (Human Geography Department) has a wide experience in the socio-economic study of the fisheries sector, which has been derived from European projects as well as from consultancy work undertaken for the Spanish Ministery for Fisheries. Moreover, it has created a multi-disciplinary group to address the comprehensive subject and the main issues of ICM. The Human Geography Department is an active member in European projects related to fishery research from social sciences perspectives.

  • The main projects in the last years are:
  • Devolved and Regional Management Systems for Fisheries. Contract AIR-CT93-1392 (1994-1995);
  • A Social Science Network for Fisheries Management (FAIR CT950070, 1996-1998);
  • Study of consultation methods of professional organisations (Spain) European Commission (DGXIV, 1998)/Nautilus Consultants;
  • Consortium for transatlantic co-operation in marine policy and coastal management education, UE/ United States (97-07-USA-0015-00, 1997-2000);
  • An European Data Base of Indicators Coastal Communities FAIR-CT-98-4399 (1999-2001);
  • Sharing Responsibilities in Fisheries Management (QLRT-2000-01998) (2001-2003) Coordinated by LEI (NL);
  • Fisheries Governance and Food Security: North and South in Concert (ICA4-CT-2001-10038);
  • A regional enterprise network decision-support system for environmental risk and disaster management of large-scale industrial spills (e-EcoRisk) Contract nº EVG1-CT-2002-00068 (2003-2005).

The project research group
The Research Group "Coastal Management and Geographical Information Technologies" consists of members of the Department of Human Geography and the Department of Physical Geography and Regional Geographical Analysis of the University of Seville, as well as of researchers within public research centres.
The main research subjects are:

  • Geographical information techniques (use of GIS as a tool for the development of coastal zone databases).
  • Coastal dynamics and risks associated with the coastal environment (focuses on coastal erosion and coastal dynamics modelling).
  • Coastal regulations (focuses on uses of the coastal zone and related conflicts, policies and instruments for the protection of the marine environment and designation and planning of exclusive economic zones).
  • The tourism sector (focuses on tourism impacts and policies).
  • Fisheries management.

The principal research projects include:

  • Physiographic mapping of the Andalusian littoral zone;
  • Development and coastal resources of the Caribbean region;
  • Inventory of NOA resources (Argentina);
  • Monitoring program of coastal dynamics; and
  • Developed and regional management system fisheries.

Facilities and infrastructures

The event will be located at the University of Seville, with the following facilities:

  • Conference room with capacity for 150 persons
  • Infrastructure for simultaneous translation, PowerPoint presentations, and other technical tools (internet, videoconference)
  • Class-room equipped with PC for working groups, as well as software for GIS
