With reference to the activities of the ICAM-GI Thematic Network (GI for Integrated Coastal Area Management), and the related project ECO-IMAGINE for the organisation of a series of EuroEvents supported by the Sixth Framework Programme of the European Commission - Marie Curie Conferences and Training Courses (Contract n°: MSCF-CT-2003-504444), we are glad to inform you that the project work programme foresees the distribution of 43 grants to early-stage researchers and 15 grants for experienced researchers in order to support their participation in the Final Conference "Future Perspectives of GI for ICM" to be organised within the project. GISIG reserves to increase the number of grants according to budget availability.

To this purpose, we are therefore starting the procedures for the selection of possible candidates for the participation in the Conference, organised by GISIG and ICCOPS on the 21st - 23rd November 2007 in Genoa, IT.

The researchers target group of the project are experts working in the following fields of the ICAM domain:

  • analysis and management of coastal resources,
  • coastal modelling,
  • coastal engineering,
  • landscape planning and management,
  • waterfront management,
  • waste water management,
  • coastal governance, planning and design,
  • social sciences, integrated with natural disciplines,
  • pollution analysis,
  • environmental conservation and coastal defence,
  • hydrological hazards study and mitigation,
  • coastal erosion,
  • geo-database management and design,
  • GIS implementations for coastal areas,
  • and related disciplines.

To participate in the ECO-IMAGINE Final Conference the researchers should submit their application to GISIG using the attached application form. For those who already submitted their application to participate in the events already organised within ECO-IMAGINE it will be sufficient to send the simplified application form also enclosed to this call. To be eligible the candidates should:

  • being nationals of a EU country or an Associated State (particularly countries candidates for
    EU-Membership and EFTA-EEA countries), subject to the maximum allowed by the EU for the participation of people of the same nationality; nationals of third countries might also be considered under specific conditions;

  • belong to a university or research centre (both public and private, including research groups belonging to industry) operating in one of the following sectors which represents the subject of the different
    ECO-IMAGINE working groups:
    - Building Coastal Knowledge and GI;
    - Coastal Governance, Planning and Design and GI;
    - The Waterfront Management and GI (priority will be given to those applicants working in this specific field);
    - Technological features of GI (horizontal theme).

To the purposes of Marie Curie Actions, the eligible researchers can be identified as follows:

  • Early-stage Researchers
    A person who is, at the time of his/her candidature, in the first 4 years (full-time equivalent) of his/her research activity, including the period of research training, since gaining a university (or equivalent institution of higher education) degree giving access to doctoral studies in the country in which the degree was obtained (the degree must entitle the holder to embark on doctoral studies, without having to acquire any further qualifications) and who has not yet obtained a doctoral degree.

  • Experienced Researchers
    A person who is, at the time of his/her candidature, has at least 4 years and less than 10 years of research experience (full-time equivalent), since gaining a university (or equivalent institution of higher education) degree giving access to doctoral studies in the country in which the degree was obtained (the degree must entitle the holder to embark on doctoral studies, without having to acquire any further qualifications), or is already in possession of a doctoral degree, independently of the time taken to acquire it.

According to the transnational characterization of the Marie Curie Actions, in order to promote the participation of researchers from all Europe, priority will be given to people not coming from the Conference hosting country. Moreover, a particular attention will be given to researchers whose place of work is in a less favoured region and to researchers who work in industry.

Selection will be made by the project Scientific Committee on the basis of the scientific profile of candidates and of their respective home institutions, and according to principles of equal opportunities among candidates.

Being limited the number of available grants, and given the necessity to conclude the selection procedures in the most suitable time for the good performance of the project, we kindly ask you to identify suitable candidates among the researchers collaborating with your organisation, and to submit their candidatures by sending back directly to GISIG the attached application form duly filled in and signed as soon as possible.
This will enable us to close the selection and assign the grants in due time to allow the participation of the grant-holders in the Final Conference.

The selected candidates will receive a grant funded by the EU programme "Marie Curie Conferences and Training Courses" (contract n. MSCF-CT-2003-504444) aimed at covering travel (economy class, according to the maximum rates fixed by the European Commission) and a contribution to subsistence costs for their participation in the Final Conference. The registration fee will be directly covered by the EU funds made available for the purpose by the European Commission.

We are glad to announce that all the candidates have the possibility to apply also for the ESRI award, consisting of software and publications for the winners.
