ESRI AWARDS

Final Conference

Future Perspectives of GI for ICM
Genoa (IT), 21st - 23rd November 2007

We are glad to announce that all the participants in the conference have the possibility to apply for the ESRI Awards, consisting of software and publications for the winners. Two kinds of competitions are foreseen in this respect, for the best projects proposed and for the best poster presented. The procedure for both of them are detailed below.
For any further information, please contact gisig@gisig.it.

AWARDING PROCEDURE FOR PROJECTS
Theme "Geographic Information applied to representation and analysis of the coastal area"
In order to apply for the award, it is necessary to submit the description of a project, according to the theme of the competition and the instructions below.

Please note that this final edition of the Award is expected to effectively lead the participants to share their projects by publishing significant maps on the web as WMS (Web Map Service).
For this reason the participants who intend to compete for the ESRI Award are required to:

  1. fill in the questionnaire describing the project

  2. provide:

    a) one or more significant WMS of the dataset

    or

    b) the data to be published according with the specifications included in the questionnaire (in this case GISIG will be in charge of the creation of the WMS)

In such a process, you might refer to the tutorial “Hands-on exercise on coastal datasets: individuation, analysis and web-publishing” Salmona P. and Granelli V. (see the proceedings of the ECO-IMAGINE Training Course held in Aberdeen on July 23rd -28th 2007, “GI-INDEED Session”).

Please note that the selected projects and datasets will be subject to publication as example case study on the GI-INDEED(1) ICAM-GIS Geoportal (http://www.gisig.it/icam-gis). At this aim GISIG declares that the project information and the related datasets provided by the proposers will be used only for the Proceedings of the ECO-IMAGINE Final Conference and for the creation of a new case on the GI-INDEED ICAM-GIS Geoportal and that they will not be used for any other purposes.

A special session of the conference will be dedicated to the selected presentations of the participants' contributions.

The Awards will be assigned according to the following schedule:

  1. Project description (questionnaire + WMS/dataset) are submitted by the applicants
  2. Contributions are selected by the Conference Organizers according to scientific quality and relevance to the conference objectives and content
  3. Selected participants will give a short speech (approx. 5 minutes) during a dedicated session of the conference
  4. The audience will vote the two best presentations
  5. The first ranked will be awarded of ESRI Software
  6. The second ranked will be awarded of ESRI publications

AWARDING PROCEDURE FOR POSTERS
The awarding procedure for the best poster will run according to the following schedule:

  1. Poster abstract submitted by the participants (according to the authors guidelines)
  2. Poster submitted in pdf A3 format (according to the author guidelines to be included in the poster booklet)
  3. The audience will vote the best poster
  4. The first ranked will be awarded of ESRI publications

Note that it is possible to apply both for the project and for the poster.
They are not mutually exclusive!

(1) The GI-INDEED (Geo-Information in the Implementation of Net-based Distance Education for Environmental Decision-making, www.gisig.it/gi-indeed, Leonardo Pilot Project 2005-S/05/B/F/PP-161012) project aims at developing a training initiative to bridge the lack of knowledge about the support that a tuned use of geo-information can offer to the various governments levels in implementing EU environmental directives. The perspective is to favour a better environmental decision-making by the organisations in charge at the different levels of the process of governance.
For a more effective diffusion of training services e-Learning technologies are used, to offer to users autonomy and versatility. In particular one of its training modules is dedicated to the use of Spatial Data Infrastructures (SDIs) for coastal areas and, after a theorical part on the principles of Integrated Coastal Area Management and the creation an INSPIRE compliant SDI for coastal areas, leads the trainee to develop a practical exercise for publishing coastal geo-data. The ICAM-GIS Geoportal is linked with this training module and houses the description of case studies of GI applied to the coastal zone.
For each case study, it is possible to browse for technical information, multimedia content and visit the interactive map, where representative datasets of the case can be found.
The members of the ECO-IMAGINE Community are invited to attend the courses, access and contribute to the ICAM-GIS Geoportal.
