GI-INDEED makes use of e-learning training technologies promoting their real diffusion of innovation, in practice and at a scattered local level. Then a location-independent learning facility is made available to the trainees. This e-Learning platform (Dokeos) gives the trainees the possibility to take the courses in their own pace and interact with the teacher at suitable time. A Learning Management Systems (LMS), based on open source software, is used to provide the training services. Within this environment, the trainer can monitor the work of the trainee and provide guidance. In addition, videoconference systems are used for messaging, discussing etc.
Moreover a laboratory environment for trainees (CITRIX) is provided, where to store and execute software. The student can access them from any computer by using only a web browser, strongly reducing licensing problems for spatial data and GIS software.
The Citrix system gives the trainees the ability to work with data and software as if it were installed on their own computers. However, all GI software and files are stored and executed in the Citrix servers while the screen image is transmitted to the web browser of the trainee.
Citrix gives following benefits to the project:

  • Shadowing (monitoring students)
  • Web GUI
  • Programs (ArcGIS, Office, etc.)
  • Storage space
  • Lectures (PPT, PDF, AVI, etc.)
  • Tests

GI-INDEED integrates also the Course Selector that allows to build-up customised learning paths, with the possibility of tailoring courses on the requirements of a specific person or organisation. Such learning path structure offers also to an organisation, a flexible opportunity to give in-house training to its employees. The training flexibility is made possible by the training content organisation in learning components, modules and courses.

Finally GI-Indeed has also two demonstrative Geoportals, giving a live training example on how to webpublish geographic data.
