A European thematic network

for Protected Areas/Nature Preservation

and Geographical Information

Dear Sir/Madam,
We're pleased with your interest in Nature-GIS.

In this page you will find some information about Nature-GIS and the procedure of registration to the network.  We would like to remind you that the registration is free.

The vision of Nature-GIS corresponds to build a Nature Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) that conforms to International standards and specification and as such has been selected as a demonstration project of the concepts developed by the INSPIRE initiative of the European Commission (
http://inspire.jrc.it).

The goals of the Nature GIS network is indeed to support public access to data and information on protected areas (and environmental) information through the design and prototyping of a web access to European protected areas offering structured information, both for the operators working in this field and for general information.

In this context, the partners of the Nature-GIS project are also setting-up a map-server compliant to the OpenGIS Consortium (OGC -
www.opengis.org) standards, with the aim of publishing geo-spatial data on European (EU15+10) protected areas at national and regional level.

Nature-GIS is an open Network and any organisation wishing to share its objectives and to actively contribute to the development of the Network is very welcome.

You might consider your involvement/participation at different levels:

1.      Nature-GIS observer
Your organisation and your e-mail address will be included in the Nature-GIS mailing list. You will receive the Nature-GIS electronic newsletter and you will be informed on the recent news and the current initiatives within the development phase of the thematic Nature-GIS SDI and the realisation of the Web-Portal for the access to the various map-servers. You will also receive a user name and password to access to the Nature-GIS "Restricted area" that includes some projects, outputs and documents.

2.      Member of Nature-GIS
Your
organisation will be considered as official Nature-GIS Member. You will be contacted, by our Association GISIG and/or by the partners of the network operating at a National level, in order to verify your possible involvement in the network and the possibility of running initiatives in the field.
If you are interested in the Nature-GIS Membership, we shall contact you in order to officially formalise your partnership.

3.      Member of the Nature-GIS Technical Development Group
Following
your Membership into the Nature-GIS network (see the option 2 above), you might consider to become a Nature-GIS technical node. If you are interested in joining the network development group, please let us know: we will send you more detailed material on how to start your own map-server in few easy steps, a description of the benefits deriving from participating in the SDI and general feedback on the relevant standards and interoperability initiatives.

If you intend to register yourself to NATURE-GIS, please follow Registration indicating which level of partnership (1, 2 or 3) you are considering, together with some information about the reasons of your interest in Nature-GIS and your experience in the field.

Hope to hear from you soon
