Nature protection in this highest mountain ridge of the whole Flysch Carpathian Mts. (Howerla 2061 m a.s.l.) has a long tradition. First nature reserves were established at the beginning of 20^th century. In 1980 Carpathian National Park was created – the first National Park in the whole Ukrainian Carpathians. The second large protected area is Carpathian Biosphere Reserve.
