VESTA-GIS Final Conference

A Training Framework for ESDI”

Jointly organized with

HUMBOLDT Open Day “Geospatial data harmonisation in action

and

NATURE-SDIplus Conference “SDI for Nature Conservation”

September 28th – 29th 2010, Lisbon (PT)

The VESTA-GIS Final Conference is organized, in two different days, in synergy with the HUMBOLDT Workshop and the Second Conference of NATURE-SDIplus.

The intention of the joint conference is to present the lifelong and vocational education and training in GI (GI science) with particular reference to data harmonization aspects and the INSPIRE Directive implementation.

VESTA-GIS is a Leonardo da Vinci project aimed at developing a training framework to rationalize and optimize GI vocational training in Europe, through the implementation of an on-line course catalogue of EU courses on GIS, supported by e-learning, and a database for the mobility to foster the transfer of knowledge at professional level. The VESTA-GIS Training Framework has been adopted/implemented also in other EU projects that foresee activities of training on GIS and INSPIRE, such as HUMBOLDT and NATURE-SDIplus.

The HUMBOLDT project (www.esdi-humboldt.eu) aims to facilitate harmonisation of spatial data and support the implementation of the European Directive INSPIRE. The technical goal of HUMBOLDT is to support Spatial Data Infrastructure enablement by providing software tools and processes for covering data harmonisation.

NATURE-SDIplus (www.nature-sdi.eu) is an eContentplus Best Practice Network aimed at harmonizing INSPIRE data themes on nature conservation through the creation of a NATURE-SDIplus metadata profile and data model.

Both projects, HUMBOLDT and NATURE-SDIplus, have developed training tasks to provide project partners with skills and knowledge needed to carry out the activities and understand the problems. In addition, the training is also considered an effective way to transfer the project results and contribute to their exploitation and replication. These are the reasons that brought to organize this joint event and present the final outcomes of HUMBOLDT through trails and demo training courses.

The first day of the conference (28th September) starts with an introduction of VESTA-GIS training framework and its contribution to the INSPIRE implementation process. Then, through short training courses and trials, the main outcomes of HUMBOLDT and their applications are presented to the participants.

In particular, the HUMBOLDT Workshop will cover the following topics:

Block 1: Introduction and Background

  • Principles of data modelling and harmonisation
  • Introduction to the technical framework and its validation in HUMBOLDT
  • User evaluation

Block 2: Demonstrators

  • Selected showcases from application scenarios that demonstrate the feasibility and advantages of Spatial Data Infrastructures based on software tools and processes for Data Harmonisation
  • Opportunities for supervised hands-on experiences with the HUMBOLDT Tools and Services

Block 3: Training

  • Overview on the training components and modules available on the Training Platform
  • Opportunity for supervised access and testing of the Training Material

The second day (29th September) is addressed to foster the development of a European thematic SDI Community on nature conservation and to promote the use the NATURE-SDIplus results. This action is also supported by a Training Framework aimed at transferring to the Community the needed know-how to actively participate in the project activities.

The NATURE-SDIplus Conference deals with the following topics:

  • Intro to NATURE-SDIplus network and training
  • NATURE-SDIplus Data model and metadata profile
  • Data transformation and transformation services
  • NATURE-SDIplus Geo-portal
  • Examples of Good Practices in nature conservation data management

VESTA-GIS Workshop Nice, June 2010 PDF Print E-mail
VESTA-GIS Workshop

Networking and Training in GIS and Water Management

Sophia Antipolis, Nice (FR)
3 - 4 June, 2010

organized in the framework of the
SimHydro Conference 2010, (www.simhydro.org)
June 2nd to 4th 2010, Sophia Antipolis, Nice, France

A VESTA-GIS Workshop will be organized, in two different sessions, in the framework of the SimHydro 2010 conference, an International conference focused on hydraulic modeling and uncertainties that will be held from 2nd to 4th June 2010 at the Polytech’Nice-Sophia. The SimHydro 2010 conference is jointly organized by the Société Hydrotechnique de France (SHF), the University of Nice-Sophia Antipolis (UNS), the International Association for Hydraulic Research (AIHR) and the Association Française de Mécanique (AFM).

The VESTA-GIS Workshop will take place in the afternoon of 3rd and 4th June ( 2:00 to 5:00 PM) as parallel sessions of the conference.  The intention of the workshop is to present the lifelong and vocational education and training in GI (GI science) for water resource management, to compare approaches and experiences of the company sector and the university sector, and to introduce the VESTA-GIS project as an outstanding open project providing excellent support for mobility of people in working placements as well as in attending courses across countries/companies/domains.

The first day of the workshop (4th June, 2PM) is focused on the development of the VESTA-GIS sub-network “GI&Water Management”, in cooperation with the TECHWARE Interest Group on technologies for water resources, and  will consist on the presentation of networking ongoing initiatives and Good Practices for training on GI&water management.

The second day of the workshop (3rd June, 2PM) is more addressed to introduce the existing and ongoing training initiatives in the GIS for the water resources management, by presenting experiences and needs both by the industrial and academic sectors.

The VESTA-GIS workshop is jointly organized by GISIG (VESTA-GIS Coordinator), IRIDE Acqua Gas and the University of Nice-Sophia Antipolis. They are expected to be attended by a multi-faceted target audience ranging from water professionals, both from public and private sectors, and people involved in the design and programming of vocational training initiatives.

New project on BRIdging SErvices, Information and Data for Europe (BRISEIDE) launched. PDF Print E-mail

BRISEIDE

New project on BRIdging SErvices, Information and Data for Europe (BRISEIDE) launched.

The EU project BRISEIDE kicked off in a meeting held in Trento on 17-18 March, hosted by the Coordinator Graphitech.
This new project aims at delivering:
• time-aware extension of data models developed in the context of previous/ongoing EU INSPIRE related projects (e.g. in the context of GMES, eContentPlus),
• application (e.g. Civil Protection) based on the integration of existing, user operational information and
• value added services for spatio-temporal data management, authoring, processing, analysis and interactive visualisation.

BRISEIDE will be applied, tested and validated within a Civil Protection application context, using the INSPIRE relevant themes, via a chain of stakeholders, data providers, technology partners, and downstream users. The Pilot operational phase will last 12 months and will consider real life events, with extensions in additional domains, being considered.
Project services converge with Free & Open Source Software (FOSS) initiatives from the Open Source Geospatial Foundation (www.osgeo.org). This ensures further development and processing functionalities built on top of the BRISEIDE framework, to be extended by public administrations or private industries according to their specific needs. The BRISEIDE platform will be available on lease, thus ensuring economic sustainability and partners’ investment recovery.
Within BRISEIDE different pilot projects will be developed, including a pilot experience on emergency resources management by EURADIN partners Government of Navarra and TRACASA.
